Laas/Lasa

The enchanting marble quarry town of Laas is located at a distance of approximately 5 km from Schlanders in direction Reschen pass. This idyllically located village is literally drenched in "white gold": of the sparklingly brilliant Laas marble variety.

Unique in purity and consistency it draws quite a number of artists, enthusiasts and admirers to the Vinschgau. The Laas marble is quarried way up above the town and then transferred down to the valley below via a sloped railway track where the valuable raw marble material is then further processed in the marmor works and finished principally for construction purposes.

Particularly noteworthy is the Laas Parrish church St. Johannes featuring a 12 century apse entirely constructed with Laas marble, the St. Sisinius chapel dating back to the 11th century and the St. Nicholas church with its 16th century frescoes on the external facades.
